Summer - Fourth Term Intensive Courses Download summer 2008 Prospectus here
July and August

The International College Summer Courses in July and August have proved to be successful for many years for students with a variety of requirements:

• Firstly, for those who wish to improve the fluency of their spoken and written English, whether as complete beginners or advanced students.

• Secondly, for those who plan to join a British Independent School and study for GCSE Advanced level examinations or the International Baccalaureate, which quality them for entry to a British University.

• Thirdly, for those who are already at school in Britain, but need to enhance their English language skills.

Since 1992 the College has run its own summer programme which we call the 'Fourth Term'. This does not form part of the standard 3-term programme and is open to students, boys and girls, who wish to come for 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks to improve their English. The Fourth Term course is intensive with 30 lessons per week and regular homework. It should not, therefore, be considered a 'holiday' course, but a programme for the student who is keen to improve his/her command of English and also get to know something of boarding school life.

All courses are professionally staffed and organised by the International College, Sherborne School. They are for students who really want to learn in a caring, family atmosphere. Parents can relax knowing that their children are safe and happy and are receiving the best attention. We understand that the decision to send your child to study away from home is a really important one and have tried to answer some of your questions here.

How old are the children? Are they all from the same country?

We accept boys and girls from 8-17 years of age. We welcome students from over 30 different countries. Usually all non-English speaking continents are represented.

Does it matter if my child can not speak any English?

No. Students are placed in class according to age and standard of English we offer all levels from Beginner to Advanced.

How many lessons are there?

There are 30 lessons of 45 minutes each per week (for seniors 13+) and 26 lessons of 45 minutes each per week (for juniors 8-13). All students do 1 hour’s English homework 4 evenings per week. The lessons are lively and interesting and all aspects of the English language are covered. All our teachers are, of course, well qualified and experienced. We also teach, in English, a variety of subjects including Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Computing, Art and Drama for the younger students, Business Studies for the older students.

How big are the classes and how many students are there
on the programme?

There are never more than 8 children in a class.
We cater for a maximum of 160 students at any one time.

What is the ratio of teachers to students?

There is one teacher for every 4 children. What happens when the boys and girls are not in class? Sherborne School has excellent sports facilities and there is a full programme of sport and outdoor activities including competitions and team games. There are large, comfortable recreation rooms with table tennis, pool, television and video and a variety of activities is organised – excursions to places of interest and the seaside, visits to the cinema or theatre, shopping trips, picnics, barbecues etc. All our activities are carefully supervised by responsible staff.

Where do the children live?

The school is fully residential and the students sleep in International College and Sherborne School boarding houses in comfortable, well-furnished single or double study bedrooms. There are resident tutors in the Houses and the boys and girls are in separate well-supervised Houses or sections of Houses.

Where will my child eat?

The students eat in a pleasant dining-room and are catered for by our own specialised staff who are used to having students from many different countries. The food is fresh and well-cooked.

What happens if my child is ill?

We have a resident Matron, and a School Doctor on call and the local hospital is a few metres away. For many nationalities medical care is covered by the British National Health System but it is advisable to take out private insurance and also for dental care. (Dental care is not free). We aim to look after your children as carefully as if they were our own.

My child is travelling alone. How will he/she get to the International College?

We are happy to arrange escorted transfers at extra cost.
